Morning in Dijon

This morning we did a small group walking food tour of Dijon. It turned out to be just 4 of us, and our guide, Philippe was wonderful. Although not a historic tour, we did hear some of the highlights of the Dukes of Burgundy, and saw some of the beautiful buildings with the characteristic  pale yellow and pink stone, half timbering, and green/yellow/red/black tile roofs.
Our first stop was for mustard tasting at Edmond Fallot..Dijon mustard is a style of mustard that can be made anywhere, but Mustard of Burgundy must be made from mustard seed grown in Burgundy,
white aligote wine made in burgundy, and the mustard must be produced in Burgundy.
There was an overwhelming variety of flavours from whole grain to gingerbread!
Next stop for a morning snack of Kir (blackcurrent liquor and white wine) and gougeres,(a cheese pastry) a lovely combination. Then on to the main market, Les Halles. This is a building from the industrial revolution, with a lovely atmosphere. Although busy, everyone seems relaxed, and enjoying themselves. And the food of course looks beautiful, with almost everything being local and fresh. We have another stop at a small bar in the market for a glass of wine and a tasting of bread, butter, cheese, ham, and several types of sausage. We finish up our tour with some gingerbread, something I'm usually not fond of. This was quite different, filled with orange jam and delicious.
People in Dijon seem to have a great attitude to life, especially in regard to food and drink!
Now back to our hotel for a rest!
